The Smart Food Foundation provides whole grains, dried beans, healthy cooking oil, seasonal fruits and vegetables, spices, and nutrition and cooking information to food insecure communities in San Diego county.
For the last 6 years, we've partnered with the San Diego Food Bank, South Bay Community Services, Castle Park Middle School, Chula Vista Middle School, National City Middle School, Mar Vista Academy, Montgomery Middle School, Mission Middle School, and the Armed Forces YMCA to distribute enough food for over 70,000 healthy meals each month.
With the economic crisis created by the Covid-19 pandemic, food insecurity in San Diego has increased dramatically. We are now distributing food for over 140,000 healthy meals each month, but we need help to continue at this level for more than a few months. Please consider donating to help us meet this inceased need. All donations go entirely to bulk purchases of healthy whole foods.
Smart Food Foundation Food Distributions
Each family in the distributions receives 2 pounds each of rolled oats, brown rice, wheat berries, green lentils, black beans, pinto beans, a 1/2 litre bottle of Canola oil, and a bag of fresh seasonal produce - which is enough food for 40 super healthy meals.
The food we distribute is an important part of what we do, but we also want to provide people with the tools and knowledge to make their overall diet healthy. We are lucky to be working with some great community organizations and local volunteers who are helping us accomplish this goal, and spreading the word about how to have a healthy, great tasting and economical diet throughout their communities.
We also provide the participants in the program with a selecton of spices and a cookbook/nutrition guide that shows them how to turn the healthiest ingredients into tasty, healthy meals that only cost about $1 even when they have to buy the ingredients themselves.
