The Smart Food Foundation provides whole grains, dried beans, healthy cooking oil, seasonal fruits and vegetables, spices and nutrition and cooking information to food insecure communities in San Diego county.
Our partner sites range from the southernest most part of San Diego County (Imperial Beach) to the northernmost (Escondido). Specifically, we are partnering with South Bay Community Services, Castle Park Middle School, Chula Vista Middle School, National City Middle School, Montgomery Middle School, Mar Vista Academy, the Armed Forces YMCA, Mission Middle School. With these partners and community organizations, including the San Diego Food Bank, we are currently distributing enough food for 65,520 nutritionally dense meals per month.

At each monthly distribution, every family receives 2 pounds of rolled oats, brown rice, wheat berries, green lentils, black beans, pinto beans, a 1/2 liter bottle of canola oil, and a bag of fresh seasonal produce. This is enough food for 40 healthy meals, which provides real food security for thousands of families that would otherwise be worried about where their next meal will come from.
We also provide the participants in the program with spice kits and a cookbook/nutrition guide that shows them how to turn the healthiest ingredients into delicious, varied meals that only cost about $1, even if they have to buy all the ingredients themselves.
The food we distribute is an important part of what we do, but our real goal is to provide people with the tools and knowledge to make their overall diet healthy. We are lucky to be working with some great community organizations and local volunteers who are helping us accomplish this goal, and spreading the word about how to have a healthy, great tasting and inexpensive diet throughout their communities.
